What is a traineeship?

A traineeship is a skills development programme that also includes a work experience placement.

It’ll provide you with industry experience, job skills, and English and Maths support if you need it.

At what age can you do a traineeship?

You can apply for a traineeship if you’re aged 16 – 24.

The age requirement is extended to 25 for people with an EHC (Education, Health and Care) plan.

You must also:

  • Be eligible to work in England.
  • Have little or no work experience
  • Be qualified up to Level 3 (this includes AS/A levels, advanced apprenticeships, T levels, and other Level 3 qualifications)

How long does a traineeship last?

The duration of a traineeship varies and they can last from 6 weeks up to 1 year.

Most traineeships are usually less than 6 months long.

Do you get paid to do a traineeship?

Employers are not required to pay you a wage. However, a traineeship is still an amazing opportunity to gain meaningful work experience!

Employers may cover your expenses to help with travel and lunch costs. You may also be able to get financial support from your training provider or JobCentre depending on your circumstances.

What industry can you complete traineeships in?

You can complete traineeships in any industry!

Whether you want to work in healthcare, marketing, law, engineering or even hair & beauty, you can find great opportunities.

If you haven’t had the chance to build your skills and experience, a traineeship is a great first step

And if you don’t know what you want to do with your future yet, traineeships can help you decide if you like certain jobs and you’ll get a taste of what it’s like to be in a professional work environment.

A traineeship doesn’t lead to a guaranteed job.

You may receive a job interview for a role if there is one available, or an exit interview where you’ll get useful feedback to help you with your next steps.

Traineeships aim to provide you with experience and employability skills that will help you get a job in future, so make the most of the opportunity!

  • Build your CV with valuable work experience. You will learn about the business and the industry it operates in.
  • Get work preparation training which can help put you in a better position when applying for an apprenticeship or other employment.
  • Boost your ‘work ready’ skills! Traineeships can help to give you the the confidence and skills to take your first step to getting a job.
  • Get support with Maths and English skills if needed
  • Get an interview at the end of your experience either for a role (if one is available) or an exit interview which will provide feedback to help you secure your next employment.
