What Does Professionalism Mean To You?

We spoke to Miriam Indries, Senior PR & Campaigns Executive at The Eventa Group, and blogger at www.lifethroughablondeseyes.com about her views and experiences of professionalism. Here’s what she had to say.

What does the term ‘professionalism’ mean to you?
In my own words, I would describe professionalism as the balance between using your skills to achieve the desired outcomes in your job/company/career and learning to continue to develop further. Being professional to me is about being passionate about your role, it’s about showing a visible enthusiasm both in your desire to get the job done but also in the way you manifest yourself within a working environment. Each company has their own brand guidelines which are there for staff to follow and this shows professionalism. Respecting your colleagues, bosses and the overall work environment is important and shows real professionalism.

Would you class yourself as a professional? Why/why not?
Absolutely. I have very strong values towards a good work ethic and being professional at all times comes first to me. I have always been driven to succeed and I do so by achieving high standards in my job but also by being committed to continuously improve myself, to learn more and to open new avenues for myself which can extend not only my work knowledge, but also my personal abilities.

How do you believe young people can develop professionalism?
Learning new skills, being curious about the field they are working in or wish to work in; having a mentor who can give them some guidance towards the road of success; letting their creativity flow and thinking outside the box; learning how to work within a team and respect other’s decisions and ways of thinking; having self-respect which in turn will allow them to do their job well because if you respect yourself, everything you do, you want to do well.

Miriam’s final thoughts;
Work hard, discipline yourself and focus on what you want to achieve. The end results will be worth it and anything is possible if you want it bad enough.
