Jobs and careers in eye care and eye wear for everyone

There just might be a job for everyone in eye care and eye wear: read on to find a job to suit you.

Love technology? Become a lab technician or dispensing optician and you can find out all about lenses and the latest technology to fit and glaze spectacles. There are jobs and careers in optical manufacturing too: you could work on lens design and help thousands of people see better, through thinner, lighter spectacle lenses.

Love fashion? Start as an optical assistant and you can spend your day advising people how to look great in specs. Learn more about frame styling as a dispensing optician, or become a frame designer, stay on top of upcoming trends and incorporate them into stylish new frame designs.

Love healthy living? Become an optometrist and discover how the eye gives a window onto all sorts of health conditions. Or work with children and adults to deal with everything from squints to brain damage as an orthoptist. If you want to become a doctor, you could specialise in ophthalmology and treat sight threatening eye disease. Whatever you do, you will be making a difference to people’s health every day.

Love business and enterprise? Every optical practice needs a manager. Start as an optical assistant or qualify as a dispensing optician and you could find yourself as the optical retail manager, or owning your own business. These exciting roles will allow you to manage people, oversee the finances, and make buying decisions.

Love to travel? You can work in eye care without being pinned down. A career as a frame or lens sales representative allows you to get out and about, meet people, and talk about the latest developments in frame fashion or lens technology. Or become a locum dispensing optician or optometrist. A locum provides cover for holiday and sickness and works in different practices every week.

Love working with people? Almost every career in eye care means that you meet a range of people, members of the public and other eye care professionals. Check out the full range of careers on the Careers in Eyecare page.

Love to make a difference? Every single person working in eye care and eye wear has a role in helping people to see better and live their life to the full.
