How to Guide: Using the Young Professional Home Education Programme

What is it?

The Young Professional is our series of free, interactive, online learning programmes designed with and for young people. At Youth Employment UK, we have created a Young Professional Home Education Programme specifically designed for home educated young people to explore their skills, strengths, and future career and employment options. There are currently two different programmes which can be accessed independently by learners at home.

Why is it good?

The Young Professional has been designed to support young people to build their skills, knowledge and confidence about their future and their future options. Young people can work solo or with their parent/carer to explore a range of personal and professional areas, from understanding the power of hobbies and passion projects to explore careers they might love and ways to find opportunities suiting their age, interests and level of education right now.

The Young Professional provides a great mix of interactive content, activities and reflection opportunities.

The Young Professional : Home Education Programme consists of 7 short courses that can be completed individually or as a whole. Each course should take about an hour to complete, but there is no time limit, and learners can complete each course at their own pace. Once the young person has completed a course they will be able to download a certificate to share with the people around them.

How will it help?

The Young Professional Programme has been designed with input from young people and home educating parents. It’s mapped to the Journey to Employment Framework, Gatsby Benchmarks and the CDI and Skills Builder Frameworks.

Gatsby Benchmark : 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7

CDI Framework: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 14, 15, 16, 17

How do you get started?

Via our website under the ‘Home Education Resources‘ section, we have two options to suit home educated young people – they can sign up independently, or there is the option for a parent to sign up. Signing up is quick and easy. Simply register on the site and use your email login to get started and enrol on our courses!

What other resources do Youth Employment have?

All our website content is completely free, and specifically designed to support young people with giving them the information, understanding and confidence to make those next steps. On the Careers Guides section of our website, a young person can find out:

  • What skills and qualifications will help you?
  • How to build skills & experience?
  • How can you impress employers when applying?
  • How can you get into careers you’d enjoy via traineeships, apprenticeships, early careers, college or uni?
  • How can you find out more with UK job trends?

A young person will also have access to our Virtual Work Experience, aimed at introducing a young person to the world of work. Our virtual work experience contains videos and associated workbook activities that help a young person develop an understanding of the world of work, the range of amazing careers that exist, and the opportunities that are open to young people.
