The Department for Education released new guidancefor schools and colleges helping them to understand the obligations and duties in relation to the provision of 16 – 19 study programmes. under encouraging them to support students to take part in social action via their work experience allocation. This is a highly significant announcement, as all 16-19 year-olds are required to do some form of experience as part of their education.
This guidance covers study programmes, broad programme characteristics, how to deliver study programmes and how volunteering and social action activities can play a part in delivering the work experience part of the programme.

The Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) publishes separate regulations relating to the funding of study programmes which should be read alongside this guidance.
