Why is volunteering important for young people? Our Youth Ambassadors speak!

Wondering why you should start volunteering? See what our volunteer Youth Ambassadors have to say about their experience!

Volunteering is an extremely rewarding use of your time, and there are many ways you can get involved. You may think volunteering will take up all of your free time but it can take many forms, from regularly attending big events/fundraisers to microvolunteering (volunteering for small chunks of time, e.g. signing a petition).

Some of our Youth Ambassadors have shared how volunteering with Youth Employment UK has been a positive experience for them and the benefits they receive from doing it:

SELMA:

“Without a doubt, volunteering has enabled me to have a positive experience. It has taught me the importance of how volunteering can create important changes to our world, and has allowed me to understand how vital it is to get as many young, keen people on board, in order to develop and further create a better future for us all. Secondly, volunteering has allowed me to follow and develop my passions on the causes I believe in.

I have enjoyed being able to have the opportunity to meet so many great people from all backgrounds and ages and find a group of people who are as devoted as I am in doing something about our underlying issues, working collectively in order to spread awareness and tackle these problems together.”

CIARA:

“Volunteering has been a fantastic experience because it’s not only allowed me to develop my own skills (such as public speaking and presenting), but it’s also allowed me to work with people who are just as passionate as myself about improving opportunities for young people.”

BEN:

“When I started attending the Job Centre in late 2012 I felt I was all prepared and ready for work. According to my advisor and my own personal knowledge, along the way I have increased my confidence and learnt a lot of skills. This wasn’t just through improving myself but another big contribution was my volunteer work.

Volunteering helped me a lot, so much so that I have been promoted to Team Leader which basically involves assisting the managers. I have even recently started studying a Team Leading Knowledge Level 2 NCFE Qualification through my volunteer organisation.”

Volunteering can be really fun, and you can make it work for YOU!
