Volunteer Youth Ambassador Ella: “People in charge need to support young people with disabilities”

Volunteering with Youth Employment UK is great for your confidence, youth empowerment and your CV! Meet our Youth Ambassador Ella.

A bit about me

I am Ella, aged 22. I have Asperger’s. I love to write and perform poetry. I am a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints

What inspired me to join Youth Employment UK as a Youth Ambassador?

I needed to find a place to voice all my views on being unemployed and looking for work with Asperger’s . Before this I was just shouting into the void.

My involvement so far as a volunteer…

I have been involved in lots – such as talking to employers at a symposium, talking to the MP for Employment, giving my opinion on being unemployed at various meetings, and writing articles .

How volunteering as a Youth Ambassador has helped me…

Being an ambassador has helped me to gain lots of skills such as how to behave in professional meetings and how to speak in them. It has given me a mental health boost and given me somewhere to voice my views and not just keep them trapped inside.

Being a Youth Ambassador in just one sentence…

Being a Youth Ambassador is professional, it’s rewarding and it boosts your mental health.

People in charge really need to…

Support young people with disabilities to find employment and stay in it. There should be more job sites with Disability Confident employers – especially in the Leeds area.

Advice I would give to someone who isn’t feeling confident about their skills or future

I would say don’t give up on what you want to do. You will probably get there eventually and if not you will find something else you can do that fits you just as well. If you can’t go through one door there is always another one.

Advice I would give myself 5 years ago

Be patient. The boyfriend, best friend, and that bit more you are after will come eventually- don’t try and force it to come straight away.

My plans for the future

I hope to find various jobs to do and poetry projects and of course I will keep speaking my views on disability and employment – loud for the people at the back!
