Make Student Finance And Uni Applications Easier With The HMRC App and Digital National Insurance Number

You can download the HMRC app to quickly access your personal information. Your tax, National Insurance and any benefits information will all be in one place.

What is a National Insurance number?

Your National Insurance number is unique to you – it’s a bit like a reference number that ensures your records are kept with your name only.

You should receive it before your 16th birthday and you will have the same number throughout your life. Your number will be used by organisations such as HMRC, your employer, your local council, pension providers, banks, and the Student Loans Company.

National Insurance is a type of tax on your earnings, and the amount you pay will be different for everyone based on their circumstances. It is mandatory in the UK and your contributions qualify you for benefits when you need them and the State Pension.

A way of thinking about it is as an investment for your future, as you’ll get support when you need it.

What does the HMRC app do?

Through the app on your phone, you’ll be able to:

  • Save , print and share a PDF version of your National Insurance Number confirmation letter (with no need to call HMRC or wait up to 15 days for a confirmation letter)
  • Keep your National Insurance number safe in your Apple Wallet (with functionality for Google Wallet to follow for Android devices)
  • Access tax calculators, claim tax refunds and track communication with HMRC

The app will require you to sign in with a 6-digit PIN, a fingerprint, or facial recognition, so your information will be kept confidential and secure. Just make sure you don’t tell anyone your password or National Insurance number to keep them safe!

How does the HMRC make student finance and uni applications easier?

When applying for student loans or any kind of other loan or benefits, you’ll likely need to provide your National Insurance number. The HMRC app can be handy for anyone completing university applications. If you’re aged 16 to 21, you’ll need your National Insurance Number for applying for graduate roles, seasonal work and any kind of employment, too!

Previously, you would get your National Insurance number via a letter which you need to keep safe so that you don’t forget your unique number. Now, with the HMRC app, you can find your National Insurance number quickly and keep it somewhere secure.
