Exploring Opportunities from the British Library? Natasha Shares Her Experience!

Natasha saw the Kickstart role for an Administration Assistant in the People team and applied for it. She worked with multiple teams to improve the Library’s training programmes. Read her career journey story with the British Library!

When I started at the Library I was fresh out of university and didn’t really know what I wanted to do career wise. I had studied English Literature and had a great love of books and education, so when I saw the Kickstart role for the People Team Administration Assistant at the Library I knew I needed to apply.

I was drawn to the role, not just because of the prestige of the British Library, but also because I was interested in gaining administrative experience and skills. Working within the People team was also something I appreciated because of the opportunity to work with multiple teams within the Library to gain as much experience as possible.

A lot of my time is spent working within the Learning and Development team. A typical day for me includes reviewing survey data, researching different training companies and techniques, and planning for events such as Learning at Work. One of my main responsibilities is to collect data from training surveys completed by members of staff. I help to analyse this data and use it to improve the Library’s current training programmes.

Events like the Learning at Work campaign involve a lot of work behind the scenes. As well as research and planning, I get involved with a lot of the preparation, such as creating resources and handouts. This is also something I do in my day-to-day role providing transcripts of training courses.

Working in the Learning and Development team requires communications with lots of different staff within the Library from metadata experts and curators to marketing. I have also had the opportunity to work with training companies, as well as attending workshops alongside Campaign for Learning, The Open University Business School and Cancer Research UK to name a few. I’ve really enjoyed working for the British Library. It has given me the ability to meet and learn from lots of fascinating people.
