6 Reasons to do a Quantity Surveying Apprenticeship

A Quantity Surveying Apprenticeship is an amazing way to get a great salary and career in construction. Find out more about this career in construction you might not have thought about!

Are you interested in getting into the construction industry? If so, you might have considered an apprenticeship. It’s one of the most popular routes into the industry for young people. The world of construction is fast-paced. It changes all the time and can be very exciting for an ambitious young person who wants to go far in their career.

Today we will be looking at one route into the industry: an Apprenticeship in Quantity Surveying.

What is a Quantity Surveyor?

A Quantity Surveyor is a construction industry professional who is in charge of the costs for a construction project. They manage costs at every stage of the project, minimising financial risk and ensuring that the finished result is value for money.

Quantity Surveyors prepare estimates, keep track of the project as it progresses, and prepare reports for relevant stakeholders. Quantity Surveyors might specialise in residential, commercial, or industrial projects, or a combination of these. They can work through a consultancy or for a contractor.

So why should an Apprenticeship in Quantity Surveying be your route into a career in construction? Here are six great reasons.

1. You often don’t need previous experience

A number of quantity surveying apprenticeship and traineeship courses only ask that you have GCSEs in Maths and English and are aged between 18 and 24. You often don’t need any other qualifications or any specific work experience.

Apprenticeships are an amazing way to break into a new industry when you have no experience. Enthusiasm and a willingness to work hard will help you go a long way!

2. Earn while you learn with quantity surveying Apprenticeships

A Quantity Surveying Apprenticeship allows you to earn a wage while you study and gain a qualification. If you are over 19 and in at least your second year, you’ll be entitled to the National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage for your age group.

You can frequently get some or all of your travel expenses covered as part of your Apprenticeship. This means that you can throw yourself into your studies without needing to worry about money.

3. Get a recognised qualification for your CV

Apprenticeships are recognised and highly regarded qualifications. Completing an apprenticeship shows that you are hard-working, dedicated, and able to set your mind to something and complete it. All of these skills mean that your Apprenticeship will make you very attractive to future employers, whether you stay in the construction industry for the rest of your career or not.

4. Get great advice and support for women in construction

Construction has typically been a male-dominated industry, but that is changing. Misconceptions about gender are declining, and more and more employers are proactively hiring women to help create a more balanced workforce.

5. Make a difference, be the change

Look around you. Many of the things you see, from houses to roads to office buildings, exist as a result of the construction industry. Simply put, construction is one of the backbones of the modern way of life. If you work in the industry, you’ll have an opportunity to be a part of that.

Construction companies can also make a real positive difference to important causes. Many youth-friendly construction employers place a focus on sustainability in the construction work they do, because what we build today has an effect on the future.

6. Lay the foundations for an amazing career in construction

When you enter a Quantity Surveying Apprenticeship, you’ll get mentorship and the opportunity to learn in a hands-on environment. So whatever your career ambitions, you’ll be off to a great start.

There are so many career paths in the construction industry. Perhaps you want to rise through the ranks to a senior leadership role, or even run your own company someday? Many of the most successful and highest earning professionals in the construction industry started their careers as apprentices.

If you have ambition and you’re prepared to work hard, an Apprenticeship is for you!
