Youth Employment Week – Involve your local MP!

As we approach Youth Employment Week (Monday 3rd July – Friday 7th July) we are calling on all young people in our network to reach out to their local Member of Parliament (MP) and invite them to a Youth Friendly MP Event in Westminster.

As part of Youth Employment Week, Youth Employment UK in partnership with the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Youth Employment are hosting a drop-in session in Portcullis House for Members of Parliament to sign the Youth Friendly MP Charter and show their commitment to youth employment.

We invite all of the young people in our network to write to their local Member of Parliament to show them the importance of Youth Employment Week and ask them to commit to being a Youth Friendly MP by signing the Youth Friendly MP Charter.

You can find out more about writing to your MP and access a letter template that you can send to your MP below.

Writing to your MP

Writing to your MP is one of the many activities you can support Youth Employment UK with. There will be an MP responsible for the area in which you live (your constituency). That MP has a duty to respond to any request made by one of their constituents.

What help can you ask for?

As a young constituent it is your right to ask the MP to help you with any important issues such as youth unemployment. You can ask them to support a local initiative, or ask them what they are doing about the issue.

You can ask the MP to support you with your role as a Youth Employment UK Youth Ambassador, by helping to raise your profile or introducing you to schools or employers. You can also ask them to join the APPG for Youth Employment which Youth Employment UK runs.

How do you get hold of them?

Usually MPs hold a surgery (a meeting where residents can drop-in to speak to them about any issues) in a local community centre or other place where residents can get to.

MPs also have offices in their constituencies with staff members on hand to help with any local issues whilst the MP is in parliament.

The best website is http://www.parliament.uk/mps-lords-and-offices/mps/ which will provide you with the details of your MP based on your postcode.
