About the opportunity

80% of your time will be spent in the workplace, and 20% of your time will be spent off the job, completing a training programme specially designed for your apprenticeship with a recognised training provider. This learning may be delivered via in person workshops, in the workplace or by online delivery.

You will learn from experienced colleagues who will support you to gradually take on the following responsibilities through the duration of your apprenticeship.

During this apprenticeship, you will be:

  • Supporting the development of the regional Historic Environment Forum and helping to organise forum events
  • Liaising with newspaper, TV, radio and online journalists
  • Organising engagement with local authority Heritage Champions
  • Updating the database of Heritage Champions
  • Promoting the work of Historic England to regional stakeholders.
  • Preparing briefing documents for meetings with priority stakeholders and MPs
  • Using Historic England`s geographical mapping platform to highlight government funded projects and provide maps on where these projects are focused in the region
  • Creating content for Historic England`s social media channels
  • Monitoring and reporting on MP activity
  • Creating image galleries and writing captions
  • Engaging with colleagues, teams and departments across the East region to research stories.
  • Assist with writing content for communications campaigns, including Heritage at Risk, grant funding and historic anniversaries
  • Assist with producing content for internal communications
  • Support the promotion to colleagues of the regional plan and its priorities

What you will learn

In training you will learn the background knowledge that will help you to understand the bigger picture of work, including:

  • How the heritage sector works: The people, organisations, policy and legislation that make up this fascinating area of work.
  • How to bring together external partners for meetings, events and collaborative working
  • The day-to-day running of a busy communications office including how to deal with media enquiries, produce summaries of media coverage, evaluate MP engagement and assess social media impact
  • How to organise your time effectively, juggle priorities and meet tight deadlines
  • How to engage with and build relationships with a range of colleagues, journalists, MP staff and external partners

Training, experience & qualifications

Apprentices must achieve level 2 English and Maths prior to taking their end-point assessment.

Knowledge & skills

  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills capable of spanning a range of audiences
  • Some working knowledge of social media and communication e.g. writing reports
  • Creative problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft excel, Microsoft Teams and power-point
