Historic England- Roofing Apprentice: (Hosted by) Pinnacle Conservation #CreateYourFuture

As an apprentice roofer you will be hosted by Claydon Plain and Decorative Plaster, who are experts in historic and listed property restoration & conservation. You will be based in York and surrounding areas. Your work will contribute to the management of England’s unique historic environment, helping to ensure that it can be used, understood and enjoyed by a diverse range of people for generations to come. Some of your learning will take place at our Summer School in 2022, where trainees will meet each other and Historic England staff, and practice conservation as an interdisciplinary activity.

You will be working towards completion of your roofing apprenticeship over the course of 27 months. Apprenticeships are made up of 80% of your time on the job, and 20% of your time will be spent off the job, completing a training programme with a construction skills college where you will learn the foundations of your trade. 

Through your day to day role with your host organisation and the Historic England/Hamish Ogston foundation Summer School you will:

  1. Learn how to safely identify and work with a range of heritage materials such as stone, slate, clay and lead.
  2. Understand the fundamental principles involved with the logistics of working at height on a series of complex roof structures.
  3. Carry out a variety of traditional roofing techniques to repair, maintain or replace traditional roof coverings such as natural slate, clay roof tiles or stone slates, along with temporary roof repair methods that are essential to cost effectively protect a heritage asset.   
  4. With guidance, learn how to record the existing pattern and style of the roof covering to allow for a diligent replica with the new covering. 
  5. Work on a variety of building types and with a variety of different materials and specialist techniques.   
  6. Learn the design of traditional roofing and the appropriate terminology. 
  7. Learn and apply an understanding of traditional methods of insulation, air and moisture movement and weatherproofing. 
  8.  With guidance, learn how to critically determine the correct materials and processes to be used when working on the roof of a historic building.  
  9. Over the course of the apprenticeship to be able to gauge the amount of time and resources required in relation to heritage roofing work.
  10. Understanding of protected species and next steps when working on buildings that house protected species 

We’re looking for someone who has a passion and interest in heritage and the built environment with a curiosity and desire to continuously learn. You’ll be someone who seeks to deliver a positive and sustainable impact by creating things that will outlast you. You will be supervised & supported in your day to day role by your host firm.  You will also receive support and guidance from the Hamish Ogston Foundation Heritage Building Skills Programme Staff and be supported by a Learning Mentor from Historic England.
