We’re currently looking for a Features Editor! This role is a key member of the wider RAIL brand team, including Commercial and Events staff.

This team has a collective responsibility to contribute to the success of the RAIL brand across all platforms and in all its endeavours. This means bringing industry insight, creative ideas, commercial awareness and lateral thinking to enhance the whole RAIL portfolio.

The role

The primary purpose of the Features Editor is to ensure that all feature content across RAIL’s various brand platforms (magazines, websites, events, social media) is relevant to the audience, accurate and engaging, is delivered to agreed deadlines and to the high standard expected of a market-leading brand.

The Features Editor reports to the Deputy Editor and works closely with the Managing Editor and other members of the Editorial team in shaping RAIL’s content output. They’ll also work closely with the Commercial and Events teams to enable the creation and delivery of content-led events, supplements and other activity. The successful delivery of this role is crucial to the brand, ensuring that RAIL is producing the best possible content across all platforms.

Responsibilities

Brand responsibilities

  • Stay informed of the latest news from across the railway and related sectors, including political and regulatory matters
  • Develop and cultivate a contacts book of high-profile individuals throughout the rail industry, its politicians and regulators to provide insight and off-diary content opportunities
  • Constantly be on the lookout for opportunities that might arise from new information or contacts, i.e. is there commercial potential (advertising/sponsorship); speakers for events; or even new ideas for events/supplements/new brand extensions

RAIL magazine

  • Plan delivery of all feature content for the magazine in association with the Production Editor, Deputy Editor and Managing Editor. This includes everything that sits outside of the News section
  • Commission externally written content, giving clear briefs to ensure all contributors meet the required standards
  • Collate features from within the internal team, planning their inclusion within the magazine schedule
  • Source appropriate images and graphics to accompany all feature content and maintain relationships with photographers to ensure we have access to the best material
  • Use industry insight to contribute to the ‘News list’ of current stories on our radar and to assist the team in making decisions about key content
  • Write features, news articles, and analysis content for all platforms to a high standard
  • Proofread magazine content
  • Attend external events and meetings where required to gather news, build contacts and increase the team’s understanding of the rail sector and its needs
  • Represent the brand on social media platforms, sharing content and advertising RAIL events and other products

RailReview

  • Attend RailReview Editorial Board meetings to gain insight and understanding of members’ needs and editorial requirements
  • Plan RailReview journal content and commission articles, alongside Deputy Editor

Events

  • Attend RAIL events and represent the brand at those events where required
  • Take an active role in the development of event content

Further developments within the role

  • Work with the rest of the team to continually evolve the content in the RAIL brand to better reflect its audience, the limitations of platforms and future growth opportunities
  • Contribute to the development of new products within the brand, such as newsletters, webinars, podcasts, etc
  • Take an active role in the longer-term development of RailReview, including the development of digital content

  • Strong organisation and interpersonal skills, both internally and externally from the business
  • Determination to write the most compelling content
  • Creative thinker
