Want to apply to the Environment Agency’s Summer Diversity Internship Programme?

Malick applied for the Environment Agency‘s Summer Diversity Internship Programme (SDIP) during university – and  he now works in Water Resources where he puts his degree to good use. Here’s his story…

My name is Malick, and I recently graduated from Cardiff University with a Master’s degree in engineering.

After leaving university, I joined the Environment Agency’s internship scheme, and I am now working in the Hydrometry & Telemetry team in Water Resources.

I discovered the Summer Diversity Internship Programme opportunity through my university careers email and was excited to apply after researching the Environment Agency. I share the agency’s values in protecting the environment and love being outdoors surrounded by nature, so I wanted to use my degree to help protect the environment for future generations.

What I Did During EA’s Summer Diversity Internship Programme…

As an FCRM (Flood and Coastal Risk Management) intern at the Environment Agency, I gained valuable experience and developed my skills in various areas. Through projects within the agency, I had the opportunity to carry out and implement risk assessments, as well as hazard identification, both of which helped me become more proficient and confident in these important tasks. I also worked on Construction (Design and Management) where I was able to learn about the rules and regulations and apply the skills learned in my Hazards and Safety module to create risk assessments and a proposal for potential solutions.

One of the highlights of my internship was visiting flood defences, such as the Boston Barriers, where I got to learn first-hand how the Environment Agency incorporates sustainability into its engineering practices. This experience provided me with invaluable insights that I can apply in my future work. I enjoyed the variety of my internship, especially being able to go on site visits to assist with projects and network with graduates in the Environment Agency, which helped me learn about other areas of the business and what people are doing day-to-day.

This Internship Led Me To The Hydrometry & Telemetry Team…

During my internship, I had the privilege of having a mentor who provided me with guidance and support. We had weekly catch-up calls, meaning I was well supported, and they encouraged me to make new connections and gain a better understanding of other job roles within the agency. This exposure helped me identify the type of work that I would find most fulfilling, leading me to join the Hydrometry & Telemetry team.

In my current Water Resources role, I can apply my engineering degree to help combat climate change and develop environmentally conscious ways of working. I enjoy the mixture of field and office work, which I was able to experience during my time as an intern. My future goal is to build on my knowledge in my current job and look for ways I can improve the efficiency of data monitoring and extraction methods using my coding skills.

Overall, my internship with the Environment Agency was a valuable learning experience that helped me develop both professionally and personally!
