Careers in Cleaning – Artur Rynkiewicz’s Story

In November 2021 CBRE the company that Artur works for, purchased the BCSC for a number of its staff with Artur being the first person ever to complete the course. Hear about his story here…

Why did you think it would help?

To help you follow the proper rules – especially the use of colour coding, if you don’t have any standards people will not know how to clean properly. In a previous role he asked 27 members of staff how they would clean a toilet and he got 27 different answers! Secondly It would help people that have some knowledge and would like to refresh their knowledge.

What did you gain?

He has worked in a lot of different environments and gained a lot of different skills. The sequence of the standard operating procedure to keep everyone safe. With proper training of his staff, he will be able to trust his staff to clean properly

Do you think you are confident in passing on your skills?

He’s not over-confident but feels he is ready to start training his staff in BICSc skills.

How would you rate the content?

Artur gave it 11 out of 10. In the past he had 3 days of 8 hours training which was very intensive. He found the training valuable, there had been some changes that he was not aware of. He feels that the training will help him to do an even better job.

Would you recommend the course to anyone else?

Yes he would – he has a lot of contacts from his past places of work and would recommend a course for anyone working in the cleaning industry, they are skills that you can take with you, should you move on.

Do you have any advice for others either thinking about doing the course or currently undertaking it?

Firstly , do not leave it until the last minute to start, the sooner you start to complete the sooner you will be using the information provided. Also don’t be afraid to learn, there is always something new to know. It can help you to break bad habits, he gave the example of a cleaning operative who was using the wrong dosage of chlorine tablets to sanitise the toilets, they were using 2 instead of the proper dosage of ½ a tablet. If they had followed the correct procedure they would have been using the correct amount.

How easy was it for you to book the assessments?

Making time for the assessments was hard as he has 5 teams to manage. Even when the time was booked out he was still getting interrupted which made it harder to keep with the flow of the task being undertaken.

How long did it take?

He started in November and finished online in January, then the assessments were booked and finally the assignment submission – altogether it was 5 months.

How did you find this style of learning?

Being able to learn at his own pace was very helpful, he started out doing it in the workplace
But had to switch to completing it at home. He loves the company he is working for and thanks them for allowing him to complete this training.

More about Artur

He holds a master’s degree in political science and journalism, he learnt English through listening to music and watching films. There were no prospects for him in Poland so he came to the UK to open a Polish newspaper in Bristol, to supplement this he started working as a cleaner, he worked 9-5 as a cleaning operative, 6 – 12 for the newspaper and then between Midnight and 2am a website and then he would be up at 7 and the cycle repeated itself. To come to the UK he was able to earn 4 times more as a cleaning operative as that of a journalist in Poland.
