Kickstart Personal Journeys: Meet Luke #WMKickstartJobs

See how Luke made the most of his West Midlands Kickstart Journey with MyWorkwear (JM Worthington & Co Ltd)…

What were you doing before you undertook your Kickstart placement?

I’d left college in 2019 after studying level 1 business studies. I then worked full time at Peter Posh for around 2 months but that didn’t work out. I then did a couple of temporary jobs during COVID for a few months throughout COVID. A few months after finishing some Xmas temp work at JD Sports, I was told about the placement at MyWorkwear through the job centre and have been here since 10th May.

What did your Kickstart placement involve?

I do a variety of roles including printing clothing, dispatching parcels, dealing with incoming deliveries, checking stock, some general housekeeping and I have now been given my own project to work on along with the other Kickstarters to list old discontinued stock online and to see how much profit I can make from it!

What did you enjoy about the Kickstart placement?

I enjoy being here, it gives young people like myself a sense of routine that was lost during covid. Its giving me experience of things I’ve not done before, which looks good on my CV. I like that, as everyone knows I’m new, people give me the chance to work independently but they also make sure I know what I’m doing and look after me – and everyone’s been very friendly, supportive and welcoming.

Has your life changed since doing the Kickstart placement?

I’d say so – it’s something I haven’t done before, it’s an opportunity I’ve been granted. Before this, my outlook wasn’t very good. I was bored, I had nothing to do, but now I’m getting experience and knowledge of a different industry. I’m enjoying my time, I feel like I’m personally doing well and simply enjoy being, really. My life’s changed, I’m enjoying each day as it comes by.

What would you tell someone thinking about taking part in Kickstart?

I’d say to take the opportunity as for the meantime, you don’t know what’s going to happen with COVID so it’s important to take the opportunities that come along. If it’s something you haven’t done before but could lead to a new path in the future, take it as the more experience you get, the better it will be for your personal career and it might lead you to something you really enjoy.

Final thoughts?

Overall with my time here on Kickstart, I cant fault it. I’ve enjoyed myself and I’d say that the scheme is a great idea for young people. I’ve personally enjoyed Kickstart – props to Kicktart! I’m happy I did it.
