Join a library online to get free access to e-comics and much more! An Essex Youth Service guide

The Essex Youth Service is supporting young people during lockdown with a range of online activities and resources. Did you know you can join your local library online for free access to e-comics, e-magazines and much more?

Are you already a member of your local library? If not, now is the time to join. A library isn’t just a place where you have to go in to get printed books. It’s a much, much bigger resource.

Search online for “online library near me” or “[where you live] online library” (e.g. “Essex online library” if you live in Essex). This will bring up council information about your local council-run library and its online services.

How to join a library online

Joining a library is free and easy.

During lockdown, you may be able join your local library online. You don’t need to go in to pick up your library card. You can just verify your account by email.

What online services can you get from the library?

  • E-books
  • E-comics
  • E-audiobooks
  • E-magazines
  • E-newspapers

When it comes to E-comics, you can enjoy everything from The Beano to Star Wars, Marvel and Manga titles. E-audiobooks are great, too – for when you want to listen to something while you’re doing chores or you’re not in the mood for reading. And of course, e-magazines will help you follow your special interests for free – anything from fashion to fast cars.

How it works at the Essex County Council library

Check the information at your own local library to see exactly how the online services work! With Essex County Council, you just sign up online then register for PressReader to read comics, magazines and newspapers for free. Or you can also get the free RBdigital app for Android, iphone and ipad to download your e-magazines or e-comics straight to your mobile device.
