Before you make those post 16 choices

Before you make those post 16 choices

Whatever choices you make post 16 here are some questions and a spot of advice from YEUK before taking the big leap:

What subjects do I like and am I good at, where can these take me?

Think back to your GCSE’s what subjects had you gripped, eager to learn more and curious to find out why. You know the ones where you found yourself turning every page of the study book. When it came to the lessons or workshops you were interested in sharing your thoughts… Do some research and find out where these subjects fit into the world of work.

The labour market is tough, what choices can I make to help ensure I am successful when I have finished education?

Your choices will need to combine study and getting experience. Employers are looking for a employee that has an understanding of theory and practice. Its is always a good idea to get relevent experince in the industry you want to go into and a really good way to do this is to volunteer. online you can access many very good volunteering data bases that can help you find something in your area.

Will the job I want exist in 5 years time?

indurstrys are changing nd fast, this is not to say that the job you dream of wont be around but its a great idea to contact industry specialists and speak to the experts. They can advice you on the changes that are current and how to get a head of the game.

What is more important to me earning or job satisfaction?

This is very important, at times it will be hard to choose between the two, but a job you love with give you both.

What do employers want and what do they want specifically in the job that I want to do?

The best way to find this our is to call up an employer and ask them. once you know the industry you want t go into and the role you would like to do, call a few employers and speak to them!

If I do not know what I want to do, what choices can I think about now?

Not knowing is often a freedom and although without the answer to this question everything can seam either confusing or irrelevant. To help with this start at the top of this list look at the subjects you loved to study and have a look at the careers that they lead to or visit our friends over at Plotr who have a brilliant ‘Game’ that matches your likes/dislikes with careers!

One more thing before you head over to the Plotr ‘Game’

It is always wise to remember that schools, local colleges and even universities are trying to sell to me to make me choose them. Ask yourself are they selling me something that I want and that is right for me or because I am worth £3,000 plus to them a year?
