More about this webinar and the Impetus Youth Jobs Gap Report

In this webinar, Sam Windett (Impetus Director of Policy) discusses findings from the latest Impetus Youth Jobs Gap report, “The long-term NEET population”. This report is the sixth in the series using government data to establish trends amongst young people not in education, employment or training (NEET).

The latest report looks long-term, and Impetus found that 75% of NEET young people have been NEET for over 12 months. The are calling this the NEET trap. Disadvantaged young people are over-represented here, too.

Using evidence from three charity partners – ThinkForward, Resurgo and TwentyTwenty – Impetus  have proposed a three-pronged approach to tackle the issue:

  1. Prevention
  2. Early intervention
  3. Intensive support for those stuck long-term.

Previously in the series, Impetus had established the Employment Gap: disadvantaged young people are twice as likely to be NEET as their better-off peers, at all levels of qualification. They looked in depth at higher education and apprenticeships. And they considered the data at a local authority level in the North West and West Midlands, finding that often the differences within regions are more significant than those between them.
