Talk to someone

A good way to work with your emotions is to talk to someone else about them.

'A problem shared is a problem halved', as the saying goes.

Who can you safely talk to about how you are feeling? Here are some ideas:

  • Friend
  • Partner
  • Family member
  • A work team mate you trust
  • A professional who's trained to listen and help (like a counsellor, or a helpline advisor/worker)

Not sure how to get the words out?

If you haven't talked to someone about your emotions before, it can be hard to know where to begin.

You can get started by just saying “I’m feeling really [fill in the blank] today”.

We all need a bit of help sometimes. Talking about your feelings is a powerful way to start feeling less overwhelmed by your emotions. A listening ear can help you explore ways to move forward that are healthy and good for you.

Not sure who would listen?

Sometimes, when you are feeling low, negative thoughts might lead you to think there is no-one who will listen. But there always is.

There are lots of helplines if you're not sure where to start.

And when it comes to people you know, you might be surprised how much people want to listen, care, and support you if you tell them how you are really feeling.
