Meet Mark...

Mark is a CEL (customer experience leader) at McDonald's, who have supported him to get his apprenticeship qualifications. The flexibility of his role means he can still enjoy an active life outside work including community support, volunteering as a Boys' Brigade Captain, presenting an online radio show and helping the Ganyan community.

How does McDonald’s support you in your work?

McDonald’s supports me to get my apprenticeship qualifications (Customer Service Practitioner Level 2). I have a mentor who helps me through my assignments. Also, when I am not well, I get the manager calling to check on me as well.

How has the flexibility allowed you to live your life how you would like?

I am still able to do other things. In addition to being a Boys’ Brigade Captain I help in the Ganyan community and I also present a radio show on the online radio station… it is called Brainy Radio.

What do you like most about working at McDonald’s?

I most like meeting new people every day. Every day is different when people come into the store, especially children. After they have had their dinner I give them balloons and say good bye to them.

What skills do you use at McDonald’s?

Communication skills and teamwork… mainly because I do face to face customer services.

TEAMWORK: I support the crew members and help them when they are struggling. As a team player I always make sure I go and find out if they need any help from me, especially if it is busy. If they want me to take a hold out or stock the condiments, I do it. I am always checking if there is something they need extra hands with.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS: I support families by showing them where the priority seats are and showing where the baby changing rooms are.

Also, sometimes you get customers that ask for directions in the area and I am able to help them to find their way.

How do you find the social aspect of working at McDonald’s?

I think McDonald’s want your personality to shine through. We have a Facebook group which we chat on. I have not been on a staff do yet, as December will be my first Christmas, so I am looking forward to that.

What’s your proudest moment working at McDonald’s?

My most proud moment was when I won the first quarter’s Best Employee in the whole North West! It made me feel great, motivated and inspired to do more.
